By US FDA convention, skincare ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration — the first ingredient is present in the highest amount, and the last is present in the smallest. Moisturizing Agents

Exfoliating Actives

Active Ingredient

Humectant
A substance that draws moisture from the surrounding environment or deeper skin layers toward the surface. Common examples include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera.
Emollient
An ingredient that softens and smooths skin by filling gaps between skin cells with lipids or oils. Emollients help maintain a supple skin texture and support the skin barrier.
Occludent
An ingredient that forms a protective film over the skin to reduce water loss. Petrolatum and dimethicone are widely used occludents found in moisturizers and healing ointments.
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
A water-soluble exfoliating acid derived from natural sources such as fruit or milk. Common AHAs include glycolic acid and lactic acid; they work primarily on the skin's surface to improve texture and tone.
BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
An oil-soluble exfoliating acid — most commonly salicylic acid — that can penetrate into pores to dissolve excess oil and debris. BHAs are frequently used for congested or acne-prone skin.
Retinoid
A family of vitamin A derivatives including retinol, retinaldehyde, and prescription-strength tretinoin. Retinoids are among the most studied ingredients for supporting skin cell turnover and addressing fine lines.
Niacinamide
A form of vitamin B3 that supports the skin barrier, helps regulate sebum production, and may reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone. It is generally considered well-tolerated across skin types.
Ceramide
A lipid molecule naturally found in the skin's outer layer that helps hold cells together and maintain the protective barrier. Topical ceramides can reinforce a compromised skin barrier.
Peptide
Short chains of amino acids that can signal skin cells to carry out specific functions, such as producing collagen. Peptides vary widely in their activity depending on the specific sequence used.
Antioxidant
An ingredient that neutralizes unstable molecules called free radicals, which can damage skin cells from UV exposure and pollution. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E, and resveratrol are common skincare antioxidants.
pH
A scale measuring how acidic or alkaline a formula is, from 0 to 14. Healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH of around 4.5–5.5, and many active ingredients — especially AHAs and BHAs — require a low pH to work effectively.
A note on retinoids specifically: they are among the most evidence-backed ingredients in dermatology, but they also carry genuine side effects — including dryness, peeling, and increased sun sensitivity — particularly at higher strengths.
